Federal Emergency Management Agency Grant Award – Hazard Mitigation Grant Program: Backup Power Project – Water Well No. 14
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-DR-4586 (Severe Winter Storms) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program has awarded $161,066 in grant funding for essential automatic backup power.
Project Overview
During loss of power to parts of the city due to summer or winter storms, or transmission and distribution equipment failure, Water Well (WW) No. 14 may experience operational losses because it does not have a backup diesel generator. WW No. 14 provides the best quality of water with very low total dissolved solids.
Key Improvements:
- Installation of a new backup standby diesel generator and related appurtenances such as an automatic transfer switch (ATS) will be integrated into the existing site power distribution system.
- Installation of an ATS configuration that automatically provides backup power without fueling for a minimum of three (3) to four days.
Current Issues:
- City loss of electrical power results in the operational failure of the well
- Operational failure of the well negatively affects the water distribution systems’ capacity.
Community Benefits:
Installation of a new generator, enclosure, fuel tank and concrete pad system will provide backup power to the existing water well pumphouse equipment. The standby generator system will be designed to automatically start, transfer power source, and provide backup power to allow a constant water supply to the city water system until regular power can be restored.
This generator will provide an automatic backup power supply to the #14 water well site in order to maintain operability and reliability during loss of power events.
